Purpose

The market for Hi-Fi audio is growing, but all of DAC's look the same: boxes with knobs. Digital-Analog Converters (DACs) are an essential piece of audio equipment and iO intercepts the growing interest in high end audio with a standout design.

Product

iO is a digital-analog converter (DAC) built upon ergonomic principles and premium finishes. A hefty and satisfying aluminum knob drives volume controls, while inputs are neatly tucked in a rear alcove to organize cables.
Prioritizing ergonomics over electronics demanded a more complex housing than competitors. Taking this as a challenge, iO is designed from the inside out to accommodate a realistic electronics package.
To complement the premium design, an elegant unboxing experience was designed to put iO's best foot forward with first time users.

Process

After identifying the market opportunity for a more distinct DAC, I broke down how to redesign the exterior to not only stand out visually, but ergonomically. Typical DAC knobs are uncomfortable to reach for and rear ports often leave a tangle of cables on the desk.
With a general target for ergonomics and a more considered location for ports, I sketched eight different concepts, ranging in knob position, button placement, and port layout.
iO's form was meticulously honed with rough and refined prototyping techniques along with over 20 knob textures. At each stage, design decisions became increasingly focused, resulting in the final form.
The final prototype was setup at my desk to validate iO in the context of other products. Controls were easy to maneuver and the design blended in seamlessly.
