Peak Design Tripod Tool

Maximal function

Compact storage

Satisfying tactility

Purpose

Peak Design needs a new multi-tool for their tripod. In the world of photography equipment, Peak Design is renowned for their attention to detail, robust tools, and clever interactions — but they acknowledge their tripod tool could use some improvement.

Product

The Peak Design Tripod Tool evolves a small, but essential component of their tripod lineup. The new tool architecture takes advantage of a concealed space inside the tripod.
Multiple functions in one compact package. With two different Allen key sizes, a flathead tip, and a tether slot specifically sized for Peak Design Anchor Links, this one tool provides all of the necessary functions for using and maintaining a tripod.
Cleverly concealed. Taking advantage of unused space inside the tripod, releasing the stabilizing hook deploys the tool to be used instantly.

Process

Four distinct architectures were proposed to the design team and together we made the decision to move forward with a combination of the Floating Tool and Hinged T concepts.
Altogether, I developed eleven fully-functional prototypes from 3D printed components and off-the-shelf hardware. By iterating so quickly, I was able to resolve a number of interactions and details.
Relying on my background in engineering, I was able to explore a number of assembly methods for the tool.
